Sour Fish are the original Malaco Swedish Fish, made in Sweden and finished with a sour coating. Each bag mixes lemon, orange, pear and berry fish in the classic chewy shape that first reached North America in the 1950s.
Malaco wanted a candy that carried a piece of Sweden when the company looked to grow sales across the Atlantic. They entered a partnership with Cadbury and chose a fish shape because fishing has long been part of Swedish culture and diet. The little pastel fish caught on. American shops later sold a different recipe under the same idea. These Sour Fish stay with the Swedish original: made in Sweden, starch based, and now with a tart dusting on the outside.
Bite one and you get a quick sour hit from citric acid, then the fruit flavor underneath. Lemon is bright. Orange is round and familiar. Pear is softer and a little floral. Berry brings a darker note. The chew is firm at first, then yields. A thin beeswax glaze keeps the surface from turning sticky in the bag.
The set comes from cornstarch, not gelatin. That is why the candy is gelatin free and gluten free. Coconut oil and rapeseed oil sit in the formula to keep the texture even. There is no high fructose corn syrup, no GMOs and no trans fats. Color comes from approved colorants listed as E106e, E141 and E160a. Label claims on the pack: no added high fructose corn syrup, non-GMO, no synthetic colors, gluten free, gelatin free.
Ingredients: glucose syrup, sugar, cornstarch, acidity regulator (citric acid), vegetable oils (coconut, rapeseed), flavorings, glazing agents (beeswax), colors: E106e, E141, E160a.
Country of origin: Sweden.
Allergens: contains coconut. This product was manufactured in a facility where peanuts, tree nuts (almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans), soy, wheat and milk are used in the production of other products. Shared equipment means traces are possible. Anyone with celiac disease or a severe nut, soy, wheat or milk allergy should read the statement and judge the risk for themselves.
Pour them into a bowl for a film night. Pack a small handful for a walk or a desk drawer. They travel well and do not need the fridge. Sour Fish suit people who want the familiar fish shape with a sharper Swedish edge, and who prefer a gelatin free gummy that still tastes like candy rather than a health bar.
This is the Malaco fish as it is made in Sweden today: sour, mixed fruit, gluten free, gelatin free, and still shaped like the catch that started the story.
