GUIDE TO CHOOSE A SUITABLE STORAGE UNIT SIZE
What matters the most when choosing a storage unit is how to get a unit with enough space for all your belongings. You don’t want your storage unit to be too small or too large, after all why would you pay for something you can’t use?
Then the question arises. How do I choose the right unit for my needs?
Without further ado, here is our guide on how to choose a suitable storage unit.
WHAT SIZE STORAGE UNIT DO I NEED?It is not easy to visualise how much space you’ll need, let alone choose the right storage unit size. People are often surprised to find out that the size of the storage unit is different to what they expected. So, answer these questions before choosing a storage unit.
What am I going to store?Take note of what you’re going to store in your unit and measure large items to determine the approximate size you need.
You also need to work out how many boxes you'll need, especially for some items with irregular shapes (i.e. floor lamps etc). Needless to say, these kinds of items need extra space, unlike other stackable things.
If you already have the necessary details, then you’re better able to calculate how much space you’ll need.
Will I need access in my storage? Now that you’ve calculated the approximate size, the next step is to determine whether you’ll need extra space to access your items.
For instance, if you want to store your belongings for a long time and don’t need to access them, you can choose a slightly smaller unit and pack it to the door.
Alternatively, if you need to access your belongings, you will need a larger unit with the space to easily access your items.
Don’t forget to pack your items strategically. Put the items you won’t need in first, then continue to the front with the more important items. This way it makes it easier to access the items you need.
What if I’m not sure what storage unit size I need? You have done the calculations but you’re still unsure whether your belongings will fit into the unit size you’ve selected. At this point, you should probably select the next size up to ensure everything will fit.
Whilst cost is an important consideration it is irrelevant if the goods don’t fit in the unit and the difference in cost for the next size is often not as much as you would expect.
If you still need assistance, check out Rhodes Self Storage’s home page for some guidance on storage space.
You can also call one of our experienced staff, or visit our facilities to visualise what size space your goods will need.
What should I do if I choose the wrong size?Sometimes mistakes happen. Supposing that you have already reserved a storage unit and when you arrive with your goods, it turns out that your unit is either too small or too large.
There is no need to panic we can transfer your reservation to more suitable unit, depending on availability.
You can also change your storage unit to a larger or smaller one during your stay if your circumstances change. If you do change your unit, then any prepaid rent will be credited to your new unit.
Another way to solve the problem of needing more space during your stay is, instead of moving all your items to a larger unit, is to simply rent an additional unit.
