This Christmas, skip the turkey and try Turkish cuisine instead!
With Christmas fast coming and another hot Australian summer on the way, the thought of slaving in a hot kitchen on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to cook a huge turkey, roast pig, and veggies sounds insane.
Rather than spending your Christmas cooped up in the kitchen preparing a turkey, prepare nutritious Turkish food that is quick and uncomplicated, enabling you to spend quality time with your loved ones. This Christmas, spend less time in the kitchen and embrace the entire family.
For generations, Turkish have grilled and barbecued their kofte and shish kebabs. The night before, marinate your shish kebabs. That means all you have to do on Christmas morning is have the kids thread them onto skewers and hand them over to the guys gathered around the grill to cook for 4-5 minutes on each side.
Friendly Facts: If you're using wooden skewers, soak them in cold water before threading the meat on them. This will help keep them from catching fire on the grill.
Salad is an essential component of every Turkish or Mediterranean dinner. This year, skip the potato salad and coleslaw in favour of a pomegranate, walnut, and toasted walnut salad, as well as Turkey's distinctive salad kisir, best characterized as a spicy Turkish tabouli.
Bake with the kids. Allow them to knead the baglama dough, an oil and butter-free Turkish flatbread. It just takes 15-20 minutes in the oven to make low fat, low-calorie fresh bread that you can use for the shish kebabs or dip into some homemade cacik or hummus dip.
When most people think of Turkish desserts, they think of baklava or Turkish delight, but this isn't always the case. Watermelon with a variety of other seasonal fruits is a simple yet traditional Turkish dish.
Turkish cuisine is regarded as one of the best in the world. Its complexity and flavour rank it among French and Chinese cuisines. Turkish Thyme, Melbourne's first Turkish cooking school, can teach you more about Turkish food and cooking.
