Age: NAS
ABV: 54.6% Cask Strength
Source: Walsh Whiskey
Spirit: A Marriage of Irish Single Pot and Single Malt
Maturation: Ex-Bourbon American Oak
After the overwhelming interest in our world's first Australian exclusive Redbreast Single Cask, we knew it wouldn’t be too long before we headed back to the Emerald Isle.
Walsh Whiskey was established by the husband and wife team of Bernard and Rosemary Walsh back in 1999. It’s hard to fathom now but at the time Irish whiskey was just beginning to turn around a decline that stretched back to the 1800s when it was the most popular spirit in the world.
Back then Irish whiskey commanded a significant premium to Scotch and by some estimates was produced at five times the volume. What changed? Well, it’s a long story that includes the invention of the Coffey continuous still, the Irish War of Independence and prohibition in the United States.
Writer’s Tears, produced by the Walsh family harks back to those glory days of Irish whiskey. And the names honour literary giants, such as George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, W.B. Yeats and James Joyce who found fame (and in some cases notoriety) around the same time.
This is the 12th limited edition cask strength release from Writer’s Tears and the Australian allocation is exclusive to Barrel & Batch members.
A marriage of single pot and single malt spirit and non-chill filtered this is a full-bodied and flavoursome dram. The nose shows notes of ginger and pepper spice alongside rich butterscotch. On the palate hints of toasted oak, biscuit and dark chocolate come through mingled with sweet vanilla extending into an exceptional finish, bursting with character and flavour.
Exclusive to Barrel & Batch Whisky Co-op from Wednesday 17th August at 7 pm AEST for members who join the priority waitlist.
