Our June exclusive single cask release is essentially an ‘unfinished’ edition of yesterday’s whisky - a single 6 year old port cask of Overeem Single Malt Whisky bottled at natural cask strength.
Back in April 2021 the wonderful Jane Overeem granted us and a band of merry misfits from the Tasmanian and mainland Australian whisky scenes exclusive access to the original Overeem bond store where we got to drop a spirit thief into just about any cask we wanted to try.
We shortlisted five to be taken back to the tasting table to be narrowed down to just one for release. We would be proud to share any of these whiskies as a Barrel & Batch exclusive making it a really tough decision. After much debate we were down to two - the panel couldn’t be split between sherry cask No. OD-373 and port cask No. OD-420.
Ray was afforded the casting vote. With whisky geeks on the edge of their seats, Ray, ever the diplomat announced…. ‘both’.
He decreed that the sherry cask was 100% ready now while the port cask would be even better with a little more time. The panel nodded in agreement. Jane promised to set it aside and keep an eye on it for as long as we wanted. What a gem she is!
We’ve tasted this cask a number of times over the last 14 months and true to Ray’s prediction it has gotten better and better. On our most recent tasting we decided it was just too damn good now not to share it. The nose features toasted oak, dark toffee and salted caramel popcorn giving way to dried fruits, butter pudding and chewy caramel on the palate. The finish is long and keeps giving with light sweet spice and a hint of orange rind.
A classic example of port cask Overeem Single Malt Whisky with the benefit of extra maturation and bottling at natural cask strength. A phenomenal Tasmanian Whisky.
Exclusive to Barrel & Batch Whisky Co-op from Thursday, 23rd of June. Join the waitlist for priority pre access Wednesday 22nd.
