Colonel Edmund Haynes (E. H.) Taylor, Jr. was a visionary who believed that the native spirit of America could be made at a standard to rival what was being produced in Scotland and Ireland.
He contributed numerous innovations in bourbon production to improve its quality and was instrumental in the creation of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897.
This Act guaranteed that what was in the bottle was really whiskey according to a standardised definition. To be labelled ‘Bottled-in-Bond’ the spirit must be the product of one distillation season and one distiller at one distillery. It must be stored in federally bonded warehouses under U.S. government supervision for no less than 4 years. The product must be bottled at 100 proof and the label must identify the distillery by DSP number where it was distilled and, if different, where it was bottled.
E. H Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel is an annual release from the Buffalo Trace Distillery and is sourced exclusively from Warehouse ‘C’, built by E. H. himself back in 1881. It uses the same mash bill as our Eagle Rare Single Barrel and is as you would expect Bottled-in-Bond. The aroma carries lightly toasted oak, with dried figs and butterscotch. One sip brings flavours of sweetness balanced with tobacco and dark spices. The finish is just long enough to prepare the palate for another sip.
