Yarn 101: The Various Yarn Types

Yarn 101: The Various Yarn Types

When beginning a crochet or knitting project, there are so many different types of yarn to choose from. How can you figure out which yarn is best for you? Most (if not all) patterns specify the size and type of yarn required to complete the project.

The following are the most popular forms of yarn on the market today:

Animal fibre-based yarns.
These yarns are sourced directly from domesticated animals and include yarn types such as Cashmere, Angora, Merino wool, and silk.

Plant fibre-based yarns
These originate from plants and consist of cotton, bamboo, and hemp. Plant fibres are said to "breathe well," making them ideal for summer clothing. Another benefit of plant-based fibre is that it is hypoallergenic.

Synthetic fibres yarns.
Synthetic types of yarn fibre include acrylic, rayon, nylon and polyester. They're simple to machine wash and dry, making them ideal for items that need to be washed frequently. Synthetic fibres are often cost-effective, long-lasting, and come in a range of colours.

These fibres are all distinct from one another. Some people are more powerful than others. Others are more washable than others. Some are highly costly (such as silk and cashmere), while others are relatively inexpensive (acrylic and some kinds of cotton). Some yarns can be machine washed, while others must be washed by hand.

There is no denying the wide variety of yarn available on the market. Knowing the properties of each one and how to use them effectively makes knitting projects simpler and more enjoyable. You can find a variety of yarn fibres at your local yarn store (LYS).
