Where to Stay in Sanur for a Yoga Retreat

Picking where to stay in Sanur can shape your entire retreat experience. Sanur is small enough that almost everywhere is "close," but if you're waking up early for an 8:00 am class or coming back tired after an evening Yin session, the difference between a five-minute walk and a fifteen-minute drive really does matter.

This guide walks through how to think about accommodation in Sanur, from beachfront resorts to quiet guesthouses to simple budget rooms, so you can choose a base that actually fits your rhythm during your stay.

Why Sanur Is an Easy Place to Base Yourself

Sanur sits on Bali's east coast and has a reputation as the calmer, more grounded alternative to the busier parts of the island. The streets are walkable and safe for cycling, the beach is free of loud beach clubs, and there's a long beachfront path that locals and visitors use to walk, jog, or simply watch the sunrise.

That calmness is part of why it works so well for yoga and wellness travel. You're not negotiating traffic or crowds to get to your mat, and the slower pace makes it easier to actually rest between sessions rather than spend your downtime recovering from the journey.

Staying Close to the Beach and the Shala

If your priority is convenience, the closer you are to the beachfront, the less you'll think about logistics. A short walk to class means you can roll out of bed, grab a coffee, and be on your mat without rushing. It also makes it easier to pop back to your room between sessions, or to catch an evening walk along the lagoon after your last class of the day.

This is especially worth considering if you're here for an intensive period of practice, such as a multi-day retreat or a teacher training program, where you'll be moving between sessions several times a day.

Accommodation Styles to Consider

Sanur offers a genuine range of places to stay, and the right one depends on your budget and what kind of experience you're after.

Boutique Guesthouses

Smaller guesthouses are a good middle ground. They tend to have fewer rooms, a more personal feel, and are often run by people who know the area well enough to point you toward the right warung or the quietest stretch of beach. Expect simple but comfortable rooms, often with a small garden or pool, and a price point that sits between budget homestays and full-service resorts.

Beachfront Resorts

For travelers who want more amenities, a beachfront resort gives you a pool, on-site dining, and the convenience of having everything in one place. This style of stay suits people who want their retreat to feel fully taken care of, with less need to plan meals or transport separately.

Our own wellness retreats are built around this kind of stay, with accommodation arranged at a beachfront resort just a short walk from our shala, so the practical side of your trip is handled before you arrive.

Budget-Friendly Stays

If you're traveling on a tighter budget or staying longer term, Sanur also has plenty of simple homestays and guesthouses. These are usually clean, basic rooms run by local families, often tucked just a few streets back from the beach. They won't have a pool or restaurant on site, but they put you within easy reach of cafés, markets, and the beach path, and they free up more of your budget for classes, treatments, or excursions.

On-Site and Partner Accommodation Options

If you'd rather not spend time comparing listings, we offer a couple of more straightforward paths.

Kolonial House is our own boutique accommodation, a five-minute walk from the beachfront studio. It has nine private ensuite rooms, with both queen and king bed setups, air conditioning, and private bathrooms, and it's reserved exclusively for our students and guests.

If you're dreaming of a little extra luxury, our new wellness retreat package with Satya lets you experience life on the water in a way Bali rarely offers. You'll have your own crewman on call, a boat taxi to shore whenever you like, and the full run of our wellness centre just steps away. It's a beautiful combination we've never been able to offer before: the calm of life afloat, paired with the warmth of beachfront wellness on land.

For our signature wellness retreats, accommodation is arranged at Mercure Resort Sanur, a beachfront property a short walk from the shala, with the booking handled as part of your retreat package. If you're joining a teacher training program and want to study without arranging accommodation through us, a course-only option is also available, leaving you free to book elsewhere.

How Far to Stay From Your Daily Classes

As a general guide, anything within a ten to fifteen minute walk keeps your mornings simple. If you're cycling, which is common and safe in Sanur, you can comfortably stay a little further out and still make it to early classes without trouble.

The main thing to plan around is your schedule. Drop-in classes run four times a day from 8:00 am, so if you're staying further away, it's worth checking our class schedule before booking accommodation, so you know how early you'll need to leave for the sessions you want to attend.

Booking Tips for Retreat Guests

A few things to keep in mind when arranging where to stay:

  • Book early if you're visiting during peak season (typically June to September and December to January), as the closer guesthouses fill up first.

  • If you're joining a retreat with us, accommodation is already built into the package, so there's no separate booking to manage.

  • For independent stays, confirm whether breakfast is included. Many smaller guesthouses charge separately for meals.

  • If walking distance matters to you, ask the property directly for the distance to the beachfront studio in minutes, not just kilometers, since walking routes in Sanur aren't always a straight line.
