Take a Short (or Long) Hike
There’s really no better way to get familiarized with the Grand Canyon than by going on a hike to see different vistas and to get up close to the beautiful rock formations. There are lots of steep day and overnight trips that require adequate preparation in terms of supplies, food, and water, as well as your overall physical capability, but there are also some easier trails that most visitors can enjoy.
An easy trail to do during a day trip is to hike a section of the Rim Trail which stretches for over 12 miles along the South Rim. It’s relatively flat, offers great views, and is easy for all ages.
Raft the Colorado River
Grand Canyon river trip opportunities are plentiful and popular, with each one varying in duration, rapid and raft style, and permitting requirements. Bright Angel Bicycles, the National Park’s exclusive bike vendor, recommends Arizona River Runners and Grand Canyon White Water for 3-13 day experiences powered by motors or oars, with each outing presenting customized hiking and camping opportunities.
Self-guided raft trips, (also known as private river trips) require advance permits that are made available to the public through a weighted lottery. The water released into the Grand Canyon is controlled, so conditions remain relatively consistent year-round. The Grand Canyon’s rafting descriptions and requirements should be reviewed diligently by beginners and returning rafters.
Canyon Helicopter Rides
Helicopters have permission to fly 1,000 feet lower than tour planes, bringing their seated guests thrillingly close to the Grand Canyon’s dramatic edges and dropping depths. Depending on the operator and its Rim routes, pilots can swoop over the Dragon Corridor, Kaibab National Forest, Colorado River and Tower of Ra, and also help riders spot elk, deer and other native wildlife.
Narrated tours come in multiple languages, including Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, Portuguese and French. Flights vary in length and often follow a loop.
Go On a Mule Ride
Sure-footed mule horses have been used as reliable transportation for decades to explore the Grand Canyons’ steep trails and pathways.
Today, you can book mule ride tours that will take you along the rim for a couple of hours or longer overnight trips where you can ride down into the canyon itself and camp out under the stars.
BONUS: Skydive the Grand Canyon!
For thrill lovers, how about skydiving at Grand Canyon?
Catch a literally breathtaking view of the beautiful Grand Canyon from up above as you jump off a plane from the height of 12,000 to 15,000 feet. You will experience the exhilarating, hair-raising, adrenaline-inducing rush of a tandem skydive. The free fall where you’ll obtain speeds of up to 220 KPH (124 MPH) and amazing canopy ride back to earth over the Grand Canyon provides an unforgettable experience.
