How SIL Funding Works

SIL funding is one of the more complex parts of the NDIS. Here is a simplified breakdown:

SIL is funded through your NDIS plan under the Core Supports budget — specifically "Assistance with Daily Life".
You do not choose SIL yourself directly in your plan. Instead, a SIL quote is prepared by the provider and submitted to the NDIA for approval.
The SIL quote details exactly how many hours of support you need across the day, night, and weekends.
Once the NDIA approves the quote, the funding is added to your plan and the support can begin.
SIL funding is separate from rent and accommodation costs, which participants pay from their own income (Disability Support Pension etc.).

In group home settings, Thorndale does its best to match residents based on compatibility, interests, and support needs. While you cannot always choose your housemates directly, providers take compatibility very seriously. Some participants choose to move in with existing friends, which can be arranged in some cases.

What happens if I want to leave a SIL home?

You are not locked in. Participants can choose to leave a SIL arrangement, though there is typically a notice period outlined in the service agreement. If your needs or circumstances change, your support coordinator can help you transition to a different arrangement.

How long does it take to get SIL approved?

The NDIA assessment process for SIL can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Starting the process early is strongly recommended, particularly if you are planning a transition from school or the family home.

Is SIL the same as a group home?

Not always. SIL is the funding model — the support attached to a person. A group home is a type of accommodation. Most people access SIL through group homes, but SIL can also fund support for someone living independently in their own unit with regular support visits. Most of Thorndale's SIL properties are shared homes with 3–4 residents.
