Massage hacks you can do at home - Sophia’s Health Massage

There are many simple and inexpensive things you can do at home for self-care and we would like to tell you just a few of the things that we share with our clients.

Don’t have a heating pad?

Don't worry, you can make a rice pack in the microwave, just put uncooked rice (must be raw rice, not shredded rice) in a long sock, you can sew the top open or just tie one step into it. Put it in the microwave for about a minute and a half (depending on your microwave settings) and the viola, a heating pad that you can place under your neck, over your shoulder, or on a small part of your back.

Imagine the creative rice packs you could make with some cute dollar-store socks!

You can also take a hand towel, moisten it, and put it in the microwave, as long as it's damp it won't burn.

Need an ice pack?

Yes, you can put that packet of rice in the freezer, but when it cools down, we prefer uncooked peas. You can store cold packs in the refrigerator or freezer.

There is a woman who also uses this method but on a larger scale by sewing the horizontal lines with a pillowcase and filling the grooves with rice then sewing the top open to having a large ice cream pocket for the back. You can be creative, and have fun with it.

You can also add herbs like lavender or rosemary to your rice pack, but over time they can lose their scent and can also catch fire in the microwave. So we like to only add essential oils if we want a relaxing scent.

Need some self-massaging tools?

For hard-to-reach areas like shoulders, a long sock with a tennis ball over the shoulder can help loosen tight shoulders.

You can also place a lacrosse ball or softball under your glutes to gently roll out gluteal tension.

Golf balls do wonders for tight forearm muscles. Hold it in your hand and gently rock it back and forth over your forearm muscles. You will get a deep tissue massage with minimal effort on your part.

Want a soothing sugar scrub?

You can make your own sugar scrubs at a fraction of the cost of commercial ones. Use your favorite oil, jojoba,  olive oil, argan oil, almond oil, etc and mix it into some finely granulated sugar (brown sugar also works great for this) and add a few drops of your favorite essential oils. Avoid “fragrance” oils as those are synthetic, always look for “essential oils” for use on the body.

You can also do the same thing with salt or sea salt and make a salt scrub.

Keep in mind that the homemade scrubs will not keep as long as commercial ones because you are not using added preservatives or chemicals and oils do go rancid after a while.
