Selecting the right bit for your horse is vital for ensuring comfort and clear communication during riding. With various materials available, each offering distinct advantages, it's important to understand how these materials interact with your horse's mouth. Whether your horse is sensitive to metal, needs a bit that conforms to its mouth shape, or requires a material that fosters a better connection, choosing the right bit material can greatly enhance both your riding experience and your horse’s performance.
Titanium Horse Bit
Titanium is prized for its lightweight, exceptional strength, and resistance to corrosion.
Every Fager Titanium bit is meticulously quality-checked and made from 100% medical-grade Titanium, ensuring you fully benefit from this extraordinary metal.
Titanium is a neutral-tasting material that naturally adapts to the temperature of the horse’s mouth, encouraging better acceptance and enhanced comfort.
We generally recommend Titanium bits for horses with sensitive mouths that may react negatively to other metals, such as developing red marks or sores, even with light contact from the rider.
Titanium provides a remarkably light feel in the hand and offers a quicker response compared to heavier bits, especially when combined with the appropriate mouthpiece for each horse.

Leather Horse Bit
Fager's leather bits are particularly advantageous for horses that are sensitive to most bits, dislike metal bits, or experience wear on their teeth. The leather naturally conforms to the shape of the horse’s mouth, providing a perfect, custom fit for each horse.
Each Fager leather bit is handcrafted to ensure the highest quality. The leather is meticulously hand-stitched around a nylon-covered wire, which ensures that in the event of an accident, the horse is protected from the wire inside. This wire not only adds an extra layer of safety but also helps maintain the bit’s shape.
Fager uses vegetable-tanned leather, which is free from harmful chemicals and artificial dyes.
If the bit becomes dry, we recommend soaking it in food-grade paraffin oil. Ensure the stitching faces outward, away from the horse’s mouth corners.
Note: Leather bits are not suitable for horses that chew heavily on the bit. Damage caused by biting is not covered under warranty or eligible for complaints.
Sweet Iron Horse Bit
Sweet iron is a coating applied to a stainless steel bit, available in both grey and blue finishes.
This coating is designed to mask the metallic taste of stainless steel and create a pleasant, sweet flavor, encouraging the horse to seek more contact and hold onto the bit. Over time, sweet iron will oxidize, turning a brownish-grey color; this is normal and expected. The more the sweet iron oxidizes, the more 'sweet' flavor is released. As this occurs, the 'blue' color will gradually fade.
Summary
In conclusion, choosing the right bit material is essential for maximizing comfort and communication between horse and rider. Titanium bits provide lightweight strength and adaptability, making them perfect for sensitive horses. Sweet Gold™ combines tradition with innovation, offering durability and a naturally appealing taste. Leather bits are ideal for horses that react to metal, offering a custom fit that conforms to the horse’s mouth. Sweet Iron bits, with their pleasant flavor and gradual oxidation, encourage contact and are well-suited for horses needing a bit that fosters a steady connection.
