Woden Valley Gymnastics Club 1996

In it's early stages the Club was small and had to operate in a variety of school halls; such as Woden Valley High and Alfred Deakin High Schools. As a result of this, WVGC was restricted to evening training and could not operate any day time classes such as Kinder Gym, as there weren't any permanent facilities. The coaches and gymnasts were required to set up and then pack up the equipment for every training session.

In late 1994 the ACTGA, on behalf of WVGC was successful in gaining a lease from the ACT Government for the utilisation of the empty Holder High School assembly hall.

After a considerable effort by an enthusiastic group of volunteers, WVGC commenced training in its permanent gymnasium in January 1996. At this time WVGC became the primary training facility for all Senior National MAG gymnasts in the ACT.

While the gymnasium was given to WVGC specifically for the training and development of men’s gymnastics in the ACT, the new facility in Holder enabled the club to offer gymnastics to a number of other programs.

In 1996 the club had 260 registered gymnasts; now there are currently over 1000 gymnasts enrolled in various programs. These include men’s artistic gymnastics (MAG), women’s artistic gymnastics (WAG), Gymnastics for All (GfA), Team Gym, ACT Display Team, Adult Gym and Kinder gym. We are currently the only Club in the ACT with the capacity to run programs such as Trampolining, Acrobatics, Aerial Dance, and Enable Gym (a program designed for special needs children).

As a not-for-profit organisation, the Club is run by an elected Committee of volunteers. Funds from fees are used to pay registration and insurance, to pay coaches, to administer the Club and to maintain and to purchase new equipment. WVGC is managed by our Club President, Administration staff, and Gymsport specific Program Managers, as well as the elected Committee. The balance of our team comprises over 50 coaches, each with a particular level of experience matched to the specific coaching requirements of each class.
