Offering learn to surf lessons, to people of every age. We have been teaching surfing for over thirty years in Margaret River and pride ourselves on our quality surf instructing
MRSA teaches people to surf. Participants can be of any age and level, from beginners or more advanced, local or tourist. Our customers participate in individual, private, and group lessons. Lessons can be from 1 – 2 hours long, and all equipment is provided. The lesson starts on the beach, explaining safety issues and the basics of surfing before the coach takes the class into the water. The coach then helps the students to catch a wave by steadying the surfboard and pushing the board along with the wave at the correct time until the students learn to do this by themselves. More advanced lessons work on positioning, introducing the wave, and working on performance.
Our business has been operating in the area for the past 24 years; MRSA has recently been purchased by Simon Tien, who worked with former owner Josh Palmateer for 12 years, helping build the business into the well-respected business organisation it has become today. With the implementation of our Brain Waves program, we hope to help many adults and children across the state to live a better life through surfing and outdoor activity. We have pride in our team and the way we operate daily.
Simon Tien
Simon is an accomplished and respected surfer within the Margaret River region. After leaving working with Josh around ten years ago, he completed a paramedic degree at ECU and worked in the mining industry's emergency services field. Always wanting to excel, a Master of Mental Health was chosen to focus on helping people further and academically grow.
Simon’s love of the sport is almost fanatical, and he gets great satisfaction from sharing this love of the sport with others who have not yet experienced it. Whether it's local grommets, parents who feel like joining in, international backpackers, or the school kids from the outback, Simon thrives on seeing them catch their first wave and teaching student’s skills of reading the ocean that will be with them for life.
The Surf Academy
Josh Palmateer established the Surf Academy in 1994. It was the first private surf school in Western Australia. Operating for the past 24 years, it is with great pride that Simon purchased and took over the surf academy from Josh in 2022. A specific type of coaching and energy to lessons that Simon learnt over the years of working with Josh, to continue this legacy has been a dream of Simons.
