Our History

Large’s Furniture: Excellence and true craftsmanship since 1946

July 1946 saw the start of what is now known as Large’s Furniture. However it was grown from a ‘hobby’ when in 1942 Robert James Henry Large, (Jim Large Snr) and Isabell Ellen Large began manufacturing wooden clothes pegs for sale to the people of Rockhampton. The first weekend of trade saw a turnover of 24 gross (3500) of clothes pegs, but this number soon climbed to 150 Gross (21,500) and beyond.

We were commissioned to build our first bedroom suite in July 1946 and Large’s Furniture was officially born. Over the next few years we continued to grow, with Jim and Isabell taking on more staff to handle the increased workload.

Jim and Isabell’s son Jim (Jnr.) joined the business in January 1952 at just 15 years of age, and by 1958 had completed his apprenticeship and become a central part of the family business. When Jim Snr. passed away in 1969, Jim Jnr. and Isabell continued with his vision, keeping the company growing and strengthening our reputation for excellent quality and reliable service.

1970 saw the first of the third generation of Larges join the company, with many others to follow continuing to uphold the values that have kept Large’s going for almost 70 years – namely our unerring commitment to excellent craftsmanship and dependable service in everything we do.

The first of the fourth Generation joined the company in 1995, many other family members have and some still do work with the company.
