The Australian Publishers Association located in Ultimo is the peak industry body for Australian book, journal and electronic publishers.
The Australian Publishers Association was established in 1948 from a merger between the NSW and Victorian Publishers Association. With a modest membership of 20, it grew out to be the biggest representative body of its kind. Formally called The Australian Book Publishers Association, the book was removed from the name in 1996, to embrace the growing digital culture.
The objectives of the Australian Publishers Association in Ultimo are to advance Australian publishing by:
- Providing comprehensive member services and advice
- Protecting and promoting the interest of copyright owners, agents, and licensees
- Promoting the Australian publishing industry's contribution to Australian culture, education, and the economy
- Facilitating export opportunities for the Australian publishing industry
- Encouraging best practice throughout the publishing supply chain incorporating environmental sustainability frameworks
- Providing professional and vocational training programs and accrediting course providers to improve the industry skill base
- Protecting freedom of expression
- Promoting member's awareness and understanding of the digital space
