There is nothing worse than experiencing a plumbing emergency, especially when it is in wee hours. Those emergencies can cause a lot of trouble and be extremely expensive to fix but you may be able to avoid the emergency by carrying out regular maintenance on your plumbing and being careful. Otherwise, you will need to enlist the help of an emergency plumber. Here are some pointers you should follow on preventing a plumbing emergency in your house.
Check Out the Leaks
You might think that it is only a small leak, but you’d be stunned at how a small leak can turn into a large problem. The leak might only be because of a deteriorating washer but if you have a loose or leaking pipe, repairing the leak while it’s small will save you from the worst case scenario of the pipe becoming completely loose and spouting water everywhere.
Also, have your house checked frequently by a licensed plumber for hidden leaks as much of the plumbing is in the floors and walls where you cannot see. If you do see a wet spot, get it checked right away before the leak turns into a flood!
Maintain the Drains
Blocked drains are one of the most common plumbing emergencies which cause water to leak, or even worse, sewage to back up and flow out into the garden or house. These plumbing emergencies are largely preventable by taking proper care and doing maintenance on your drains. Do not allow oil, grease, hair, food or other trash to go down the drains. Throw out the grease, and use filters or traps to catch the other stuff.
Find Where the Pipes Run
If you are doing any drilling, digging, or renovation work that is likely to take you near your water pipes, always make sure that you know precisely where those pipes are so that you don’t cut into or break them, resulting in you having to call a licenced plumber to fix the problem that you’ve created.
