Supporting the mental health of children and young people requires an understanding of development, family circumstances, education and the wider systems surrounding each person. If you already work in healthcare, education, social work or community services, postgraduate study can help you build specialist knowledge without necessarily stepping away from your current role.
The five Australian universities below offer online postgraduate courses related to youth mental health, child and adolescent mental health or student wellbeing. They do not all lead to the same professional outcome, so compare the curriculum, entry requirements and scope carefully before applying.
Best for a Comprehensive Youth Mental Health Specialisation – The University of Melbourne
The University of Melbourne offers a 100% online Master of Youth Mental Health for professionals who want to improve support and outcomes for young people experiencing mental ill-health.
The program was co-designed with Orygen, a specialist youth mental health research and clinical organisation. Its curriculum examines development, assessment, early intervention, psychosocial interventions, inclusive practice, mental health services and early psychosis.
You can choose between coursework and research pathways. The coursework pathway develops specialist professional knowledge, while the research option includes a youth mental health research project and can provide a possible pathway towards doctoral study.
The degree contains 12 subjects and is normally completed part-time over 24 months. You study one subject at a time, with the university recommending approximately 15 to 20 hours of weekly study. Six annual intakes and the ability to participate live or access learning at another time provide additional flexibility.
Entry may be possible through a relevant undergraduate degree, a degree in another discipline combined with relevant experience, or substantial professional experience. This makes the program relevant to people from fields including health, psychology, nursing, social work, education, occupational therapy and community services.
It is the most directly focused option on this list if you want a complete master’s degree devoted specifically to youth mental health rather than a general mental health or education qualification.
Best for Child and Family-Focused Mental Health Study – Victoria University
Victoria University offers an online Master of Child and Adolescent Mental Health focusing on young people from early childhood through adolescence.
The curriculum covers early identification, assessment, trauma-informed care, family systems and school-based approaches. This focus may appeal if your role requires you to work not only with young people but also with their parents, carers, schools and other service providers.
Victoria University uses an online Block Model that lets you study one unit at a time. That structure can make it easier to concentrate on one subject while managing employment and family responsibilities.
The course contains 12 units and is designed for professionals working across educational, therapeutic, community and clinical settings. However, the university states that the degree is not professionally accredited. You should therefore check whether it meets the requirements of your intended role, particularly if you are pursuing registration in a regulated profession.
This option is particularly relevant if you want your studies to include younger children and family-centred practice rather than focusing primarily on adolescents and emerging adults.
Best for Teachers and School Leaders – La Trobe University
La Trobe University offers a fully online Graduate Certificate in Mental Health for Education. It is designed for people who want to identify and respond to mental health and wellbeing concerns within schools.
The four-subject curriculum covers therapeutic skills, perceptions of mental illness, school wellbeing and trauma theory and practice. You also examine issues including anxiety, depression and bullying while learning how schools can create safer and more supportive environments.
The course can be completed in approximately six months. Its shorter length may suit you if you want focused professional development without committing immediately to a complete master’s degree.
Unlike a general mental health qualification, this program places mental health within the context of education. It may therefore be most useful if you are a teacher, wellbeing coordinator, school leader or education professional who wants to strengthen school-wide responses to student wellbeing.
Entry normally requires an Australian bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification. As with the other programs here, completing the certificate does not by itself qualify you as a psychologist or counsellor.
Best for Broad Mental Health Practice – Southern Cross University
Southern Cross University offers an online Graduate Certificate in Mental Health covering assessment, therapeutic practice, physical health needs and mental healthcare in community, nongovernment and primary-care settings.
This program is broader than the youth-specific qualifications above. That can be useful if you work with people across several age groups or want mental health knowledge that is not restricted to children and adolescents.
The certificate contains four units and can provide advanced standing towards the university’s Graduate Diploma or Master of Mental Health. Learning is delivered through formats including videos, quizzes, interactive presentations and online discussions. Live classes are optional, while students also receive support from learning coaches and student success advisers.
Admission routes include a bachelor’s degree, certain vocational mental health qualifications combined with relevant experience, or three years of relevant professional experience.
This is a practical option if you want a shorter entry point into postgraduate mental health study and may later continue into a graduate diploma or master’s degree.
Best for Student Wellbeing and Pastoral Care – The University of Notre Dame Australia
The University of Notre Dame Australia offers an online Graduate Certificate in Wellbeing in Education for teachers, education professionals and people working in related fields.
The course focuses on pastoral care, resilience and wellbeing within educational settings. Available subjects include positive education, building resilient schools, mindfulness, pastoral care and leading wellbeing initiatives.
You complete four subjects selected from the available course list. Assessment may include essays, reflective journals and scholarly projects, and there is no practicum requirement. The program can be completed full-time in approximately six months or studied part-time.
This is not a clinical mental health qualification. Its purpose is to help educators support wellbeing and lead pastoral-care initiatives within schools. It may suit you if your responsibilities involve student support but you do not need the clinical depth provided by a specialist youth mental health master’s degree.
What to Compare Before Applying
Begin by deciding whether you need clinical knowledge, school-based wellbeing skills or a broader understanding of mental health practice. Course titles can sound similar even when the intended audiences and outcomes differ considerably.
You should also check whether the qualification leads to professional registration. Most specialist youth mental health and wellbeing courses are designed to strengthen skills you already use. They do not automatically qualify you to work as a psychologist, counsellor, social worker or mental health nurse.
Delivery format matters as well. “Online” may mean scheduled virtual classes, recorded learning or a combination of both. Ask how many hours you should expect to study each week and whether assessments or group activities take place at fixed times.
If you will be studying while working, protecting your own wellbeing is just as important as planning your timetable. These suggestions for taking care of your wellbeing as a student provide a useful reminder to account for rest and personal commitments before taking on a demanding postgraduate workload.
Finally, confirm current tuition fees, admission requirements, intake dates and financial assistance directly with each university. Course structures and fees can change between academic years.
Which Course Is Right for You?
Victoria University may be the better fit if you want to concentrate on children, adolescents and family-centred support. La Trobe University and the University of Notre Dame Australia are more directly relevant to teachers and school leaders, while Southern Cross University provides a broader introduction to mental health practice.
If you want an entire master’s degree focused specifically on adolescents and young adults, the University of Melbourne offers the most comprehensive youth mental health specialisation among these five. Its connection with Orygen, choice of coursework and research pathways, and flexible online delivery make it particularly relevant to experienced professionals who want to deepen their expertise while continuing to work.
