Everybody knows the importance of sunscreen but the question is, are you using it correctly?
Sunscreen is useful in helping block out harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause sunburn, skin discoloration, sun spots or even skin cancer. It is important for every sunscreen user to take note of two components: the level of protection the product can provide against UVA and UVB. UVA can cause wrinkles and UVB is the factor for sunburns appearance.
It is important to use a good sunscreen product which offers protection against both these components. But most importantly, to use it in a proper manner. Here, we have compiled five mistakes that most people commonly commit while using sunscreen:
Mistake 1 - Not applying enough
You won’t be getting the protection you need when you don’t apply enough sunscreen. Use a pea-sized amount for your face and two shot glasses’ worth of sunscreen on your body.
Mistake 2 - Applying sunscreen when you’re already out
It would be too late! Sunscreen should be applied at least 20 minutes prior to sun exposure. This would allow sufficient time for the UV blockers to bond to your skin.
Mistake 3 - Neglecting UVA protection
It is important to be aware about what you're putting on your face and body. Look at the ingredients list prior to buying to check if you're getting the right protection from harmful UVA rays.
Mistake 4 - Not reapplying
Applying sunscreen with a high amount of sun protection factor is not sufficient for a whole day's worth of protection. After your initial sunscreen application, you should reapply every 2 hours.
Mistake 5 - Not applying while indoors
Being indoors is not sufficient protection from the wrath of the sun. The sun’s rays are able to penetrate through your windows, for instance, so you will still need sun protection. While indoors, you might want to use a lightweight sunscreen formula.
