Not only do the good folk at Buffalo Trace Distillery bless us with their fine bourbon they also bless the whisky world with the excellent barrels they use to mature it.

Launceston Distillery has made a point to get their hands on ex-Buffalo Trace barrels whenever they get the chance. And they sure know their way around a bourbon cask - picking up gold for their regular release at the most recent Australian Distilled Spirits Awards.

This whisky is among the best Tasmanian releases we’ve been lucky enough to try. On the nose, we get vanilla, brown sugar and pear with butterscotch, vanilla ice cream and a hint of citrus. The finish is lengthy with custard and wood spice. It feels like we just described a bourbon but this really is a wonderful combination of quality Tasmanian single malt and a top-notch ex-Buffalo Trace barrel.
