About this post

Post Description:

The best time to hike the Grand Canyon is March through May, or September through November. Grand Canyon weather in May, and Grand Canyon weather in September is on the warmer end of the spectrum.

Temperatures can get up to the high 70s (~21 degrees Celcius) or down to the low 40s (~4 degrees Celcius) during those two months. This is considered the best time to go to the Grand Canyon if you prefer hiking in warmer temperatures that aren’t too hot.

Grand Canyon's Weather is Similar to Las Vegas

One way to get a good understanding of how the weather will be in the Grand Canyon—the West Rim in particular—is knowing what is happening in Las Vegas. You can do an online weather check for Las Vegas locally; that will in turn tell you how the weather is in the Grand Canyon.

Las Vegas climate is very similar to a subtropical desert so if you don't mind the sun, you can go with shorts, a light shirt, and sandals.

So, what should you wear when you are visiting the Grand Canyon?

Layers

Temperatures in the Grand Canyon can vary. In late fall, days can be cooler, which makes layering essential – especially when hiking into the canyon.

Many people forget that deserts often get cold as the sun sets. Even on warmer days, bring a jacket if you plan to be out during the night. Light layers give you the most flexibility to adapt your outfit to the Canyon’s weather. Add a layer in the morning or evening when it’s chilly, and peel them off as the day warms up or as you hike!

Hiking boots or walking shoes

Your shoe choice should depend on the intensity of your itinerary. Running shoes, sports sandals, or hiking boots are ideal. Flip flops, high heels, or new shoes that you’re still breaking in are not. If you’re planning on hiking into the Canyon, wear a mid-weight boot with lots of ankle support. For the Rim trail, a running shoe with good tread will do the job.

For just visiting the main viewpoints, regular walking shoes are suitable as the terrain is mostly paved and not too challenging right off the main path. Picking shoes with a good grip is essential as less explored areas can have loose gravel.

Long durable pants

On scorching hot days, long pants aren’t necessary, but still, make sure you bring them on your trip. The Grand Canyon can be unexpectedly chilly and long pants will be a lifesaver. Ensure they are durable if you plan to venture off the main path as sharp rocks can rip finer fabrics. Jeans are fine for a day visitor but if you’re camping, bring something more appropriate.

Hat and sunscreen

Some areas of the Grand Canyon, such as the West Rim, don’t provide much shade. Even on cloudy days, no matter which Rim you visit, it’s still important to wear sunscreen. Brimmed hats can help keep the sun off of your face. The Arizona sun is stronger than in many areas of the world and can leave you with an uncomfortable burn if you’re not cautious. Use a packing cube in your backpack to keep your belongings organized until you need them.

Be aware of wind when you’re visiting as it has been known to blow hats off into the canyon—be sure yours is secure!

Bandana

Cheap, very versatile, and functional, you can use your bandanna to cover your mouth and nose while you’re hiking the Grand Canyon in May. This is the windy season, although it can be very windy all year round. Let’s remember that the Grand Canyon geography is exceptionally dry and windy. Dust in the air is common and unpleasant.

Shawl

Planning to see the sunrise at the Grand Canyon and not sure what to wear? We got you! Wear a shawl and fur pom beanie for the perfect outfit on a chilly and mesmerizing morning at the Grand Canyon.

A wool shawl is very much on the theme for the Grand Canyon. It’s cozy & warm. A wool shawl will elevate your outfit from hiking casual to western diva. If you’re wondering what to wear to Grand Canyon in November or what to wear to Grand Canyon in March… this is it!

Don’t forget sunglasses!

The sun shines brightly all year at the Grand Canyon, so bring a pair of sunglasses no matter what season you visit in. Consider leaving your designer shades at home in case they get scratched or broken.
