About this post

Post Description:

From the warehouse districts of Manhattan came a look so bold, so brilliant, that it took the style world by storm. When it all started, loft conversions were the rage working to make raw interiors really work for modern urban living. The result? Exposed brick, pipeworks and a rustic, real-life factory feel or a sleek urban hi-tech finish for a look that’s as unique as you want to make it.

Look at metallic finishes for the right industrial look
One of the ways to distinguish the old factory look (or steampunk) from a hi-tech architectural style is to choose the right materials and finishes. Both use a high degree of metallic surfaces in furnishings and light fittings. Typically chrome or black & white effects for Hi-Tech; Copper or wrought iron go with Steampunk. So it’s up to you which way you want to go for the effect you want.

1. Hi-Tech as chilled and minimal(and very, very tidy!)

For anyone who hates clutter or random collections, this is the ultimate style for pulled-back living where technology rules the roost. Focal points are usually media and seating, with a touch of personal flair for a sound system or drinks display.

Excellent possibilities for dramatic lighting. Look for chrome or brushed metal finishes as well as Black & White. Light temperatures should be in the Cool Zone for bright white effects –LED lighting is perfect for this –but with dimmer capability to adjust the mood. Here are some good industrial lighting styles from Crompton:

Lighting LevelsFor a Hi-Tech feel, keep to straight lines and smooth surfaces. Notice the great use of lighting as recessed close to floor as well as chrome tracks and recessed luminaires.

2. Steampunk as raw and rustic (and very, very eclectic!)

For anyone who loves to keep it basic yet add personality, this is an excellent style to combine natural, organic finishes like exposed brick, worn wood floors and ceilings with infrastructure on display (like steam pipes or cable housing). Dress it up with vintage collectables, simple rack systems for shelving and re-purposed furnishing –worn leather is an ideal choice for seating in lounges or random chairs.

There’s a real warehouse conversion feel to this style when done right, and you don’t need a heap of space to pull it off. Nooks and crannies and interesting layouts are great to create mini-zones, accented with retro-factory-flair lighting.

Look for copper, wire or simple metal finishes for industrial lighting factory style. Here are some good examples from Crompton:
