The programme should be able to provide fairly accurate and timely assessments to determine whether any damage to piping might jeopardise the continued safe operation. It is also the purpose of this Code to require owners/users to address any inspection findings that call for corrective actions to maintain the integrity of pipes in accordance with an appropriate risk assessment.

API 570 is concerned with metallic and fibreglass-reinforced plastic piping systems. API 570 governs pipe systems involving process fluids, hydrocarbons, chemical products, natural gas, high-pressure gases, and other flammable or toxic fluids. When the code was first published in 1993, it was written for systems in the petroleum and chemical processing industries.

However, this code may be applied to virtually any branch of industry where hazardous materials are transported via piping systems. API 570 doesn’t cover certain specialised equipment, nor equipment that has been decommissioned; instead, it covers techniques that are temporarily out of service. The standard does not cover the inspection of equipment using exchanger tubes or control valves.
