You don’t have to do moving to a new space alone. There are many moving companies that are available to help you. Just keep in mind the following tips when choosing a moving company you’ll work with.
Ask friends, co-workers and local real estate agents. Look for moving companies that have offices near your home. When you have a list of recommended companies, go online to do a quick background check on them. You should also check their website.
Set an appointment.
If you’ve already listed three or four companies you want to check out, make appointments to have a representative from each one come to you and give you a written estimate. It’s important for companies to see your stuff before they can give you an accurate estimate. Exclude a company that tries to give you an estimate over the phone, or tells you that seeing your belongings in advance isn’t necessary.
Enquire about the company.
- Over the phone, ask if the company and its employees are bonded, licensed and insured (long-distance movers require a different license than local movers), and what their insurance covers, especially if you pack yourself.
- Ask if the movers who will do the job are employees, contractors or day labourers. Full-time employees tend to be more honest, experienced and conscientious than casual workers.
- Know how long have they been in business.
- If you can, visit the company’s office and check out its facilities. Check if their trucks are in good condition and marked with the company name, and if the office is clean and professional-looking.
Determine the items to be moved.
List the things what will be moved, pointing out special items like mirrors, fragile antiques, a piano or a pool table. Explain what you want the movers to handle and what you will handle yourself. Know the exact address of your new home, if there are any obstacles such as stairs or narrow hallways, and if any items will be put into storage.
Oversee the actual moving.
On moving day, make sure you’re present to oversee, but don’t interfere with the movers’ job, unless they’re doing something wrong. Be pleasant in dealing with them so they’re more likely to give their best shot for you. If you’re pleased with their service, it’s optional but highly recommended to give tip to each of the movers, usually about 5% of the total cost of moving.
Double check your items.
Once moving is completed, check your belongings carefully, and if anything is missing or damaged, notify the company right away. Trustworthy movers will usually reimburse you for minor damage within a few days. If you have an insurance claim, you must deal with it as quickly as possible, or it may be disputed.
