Restaurants - Kangaroo Point, QLD
‘Ipoh Laksa’ is a family business Malaysian Restaurant run by previous Ipoh residents, that is why the food is very consistent with the food served in Ipoh.
Ipoh is pronounced as ‘Epoh’
People often ask why our restaurant is called Ipoh Laksa, (it is a meaningful name). Firstly, Ipoh is a town in the state of Perak (Malaysia). Ipoh has the highest Chinese population in Malaysia than any other state.
During the black gold rush (tin ore) many Chinese people came to Malaysia to try their luck. Eventually, settling down and starting a family in Ipoh. Because Chinese people enjoy their food, their standards are very high and competitive. Ipoh has always been famous for their food, and combined with different cultures, such as local malaysians, Indians, British and Portugese influences, makes life very interesting.
Not many people in Australia knew about ‘Laksa’ until recently. Many people have traveled to Malaysia or Singapore and tried Laksa and found that they like it very much and therefore started looking for it here.
To simplify the Laksa, there are only two types: One is Curry Laksa, which is sold everywhere nowadays, the second is Assam Laksa (Fish based hot and tangy soup), famous in Penang. Having said that, every state in Malaysia cook their Laksa a little differently.
